Commissariat of St. Joseph Elects New Leadership

Saigon, Vietnam – The Second Chapter of the Commissariat of St. Joseph of the St. Elias Province in Vietnam took place from 22 to 25 November 2022 at Phuc Vinh retreat house, in Binh Tan, Saigon. During the Chapter, members of the Commissariat discussed the future of the organization and elected new leadership for the next three years.

The Chapter was not only a time for meetings, planning, reporting, and studying, but also an opportunity for fraternity and for members to see each other. The presence of Fr. Mario Esposito, O.Carm., Prior Provincial, and Fr. Joseph Nguyen Do, O.Carm., his socius, made the occasion even more significant and highlighted the importance of the Chapter for the Carmelite community in Vietnam.

During the Chapter, members of the Commissariat of St. Joseph discussed the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and outlined a plan for the future of the organization. The discussions were productive and resulted in a clear vision for the Commissariat, with a renewed focus on evangelization, pastoral work, and social outreach.

The Chapter also recorded the 25th anniversary of the Commissariat of St. Joseph’s foundation in Vietnam and marked the 5oth Anniversary of Profession of Vows of Fr. Mario Esposito, O.Carm. The Carmelite community in Vietnam has grown significantly over the years, with almost 50 members currently serving in various roles throughout the country.

The Chapter was also the time to elect new leadership for the Commissariat of St. Joseph. The following members were elected and confirmed by the chapter:

  • Father Joseph Hung Tran, O.Carm. as Commissary Provincial.
  • Father Francis X. Chinh Nguyen, O.Carm. as First Councilor.
  • Father Joseph Thien Nguyen, O.Carm. as Second Councilor.

Father Joseph Hung Tran, the newly elected Commissary Provincial, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Commissariat. He highlighted the importance of prayer, service, and community in the Carmelite tradition and promised to work closely with the new councilors to fulfill the mission of the Commissariat in Vietnam.

The newly elected leadership will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Chapter’s decisions and will work together to ensure the success of the Commissariat of St. Joseph’s mission in Vietnam.

The Second Chapter of the Commissariat of St. Joseph of the St. Elias Province in Vietnam was a significant event for the organization, providing members with the opportunity to discuss the future of the Commissariat, elect new leadership to guide it forward, and come together as a community of Carmelites. The new Commissary Provincial and councilors will undoubtedly bring their experience, vision, and energy to the role, ensuring the continued growth and success of the Commissariat in Vietnam.
