Reverend James R. Sidoti, O.Carm., a member of the Order of Carmelites of the North
American Province of St. Elias, died on October 6, 2022 after several recent hospitalizations. He was 73 years old.
Father James was born in Staten Island, New York on April 26, 1949 to Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Josephine (Reina) Sidoti. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his brother Conrad and his wife Theodora, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many friends.

Father James received his habit in the Order of Carmelites, North American Province of Saint Elias in June 1986, when he entered the Carmelite Novitiate in Williamstown, Massachusetts. At the conclusion of his Novitiate year, he professed First Vows of obedience,
poverty and chastity on June 15, 1987. He professed his Solemn Vows on October 21, 1990, in Washington, DC and was ordained to the priesthood on May 16, 1992 also in Washington, DC. He graduated with a B.S. in Business Management from Husson College, Bangor, Maine in 1972. He obtained an MDiv. From the Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC in 1992. Father James served as Parochial Vicar and Procurator of Saint Simon Stock Church in the Bronx (1992-1993). He was Parochial Vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn, NY (1993-1999). Father James was also Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Bloomingburg, NY (1999-2004) and was Prior of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory, Middletown, NY from October 2000 to May 2004. During that time, he also served as the Director of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, NY (2002-2004). From May 2004
to January 2009 Father James was Parochial Vicar at Transfiguration Church in Tarrytown, NY. He was appointed Administrator of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in January 2009 and became Pastor in November 2009, serving there until December 2011. He was Administrator of St. Joseph Parish in Troy, New York from February to May, 2012 and Pastor from May 2012 to January 2020. Father James retired and was in residence at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory in Middletown as of January 1, 2020. He also lived briefly in St. Albert’s Priory until his death. A dedicated and hard-working Carmelite, Father James Raymond Sidoti, O.Carm. was a professed member of the Carmelite Order for 35 years and a priest for 30 years. He will be greatly missed.


Visitation will be held in The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 70 Carmelite Dr., Middletown, on Wednesday, October 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O. Carm., Prior Provincial, will officiate. Interment will be in the Carmelite Cemetery in Middletown.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, 130 Highland Ave., Middletown.
