Simbang Gabi sa Shrine 2023
The Fil-Am Catholic Community of Hudson Valley (FACCHV) hosted their annual Simbang Gabi sa Shrine at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, New York. This is the seventh year that the Filipino community have hosted this devotional Mass at the National Shrine. Simbang Gabi which is translated to “Night Mass” is a nine-day devotional Masses in honor of the Blessed Mother’s last nine days of pregnancy. Often known as Misa de Gallo or “Rooster’s Mass,” the tradition of these Masses began in the Philippines when the farmers had to get up early to attend Mass before working in the fields. Throughout the last few years, these Masses were shifted to the evening, allowing those who work during the day to attend Mass in the evening.
This year’s Mass was celebrated by Fr. Tony Bautista, parochial vicar at St. John’s Catholic Church in Goshen, New York. He was assisted by Dr. Alex Gapay, deacon of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Middletown. Fr. Gerard Tang Choon, O.Carm., Shrine Rector, Fr. Von Erick Maria Sandoval, O.Carm., FACCHV coordinator, and Fr. Roberto Perez, O.Carm., all concelebrated the Mass. Bro. Joseph Trung Do. O.Carm., Shrine intern served the Mass. The Mangonon Family provided the music for the evening.
In his homily, Fr. Bautista talked about the importance of Simbang Gabi, the tradition, and the importance of our Catholic faith. He also mentioned that the celebration of Simbang Gabi is one of the ways that Filipinos can celebrate as a family and be united with other Filipinos worldwide, while being away from the Philippines. The Mass was celebrated in Tagalog, the mother language of the Philippines. Over 100 people from the Hudson Valley area came to attend this highly anticipated Mass. Following the Mass, the Filipino community held their annual Christmas Party at Pilgrim Hall which consisted of a potluck, dancing, and karaoke. A great time was had by all. The Fil-Am Catholic Community of Hudson Valley looks forward to hosting more events at the Shrine this upcoming 2024.
