Three Young Men Profess Simple Vows in Vietnam
August 19, 2024—Saigon, Vietnam, In a deeply moving and joyful celebration, three young men in Vietnam professed their simple vows in the Order of Carmelites on August 19, 2024. They are Brothers John Baptist Duc Nguyen, O.Carm., Paul Toan Ho, O.Carm., and Peter Vu Nguyen, O.Carm. The Mass, marking their official commitment to the Carmelite way of life, was presided over by Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm., Prior Provincial of Saint Elias Province, in the presence of fellow Carmelites, family members, and friends.
The ceremony followed a year of novitiate, a period of intense spiritual formation and discernment. During this time, the three novices immersed themselves in the Carmelite charism of prayer, contemplation, community, and service. Their profession of simple vows—poverty, chastity, and obedience—symbolized the next step in their journey within the Carmelite Order, as they continue to grow in their vocation.
Father Provincial Mario Esposito, who presided over the Mass, expressed his joy at witnessing these young men take their vows, emphasizing the beauty and commitment of their response to God’s call. In the homily given by Rev. Joseph Hung Tran, O.Carm., Commissary Provincial of Vietnam, he reflected on the desire of seeking God in daily life, significance of the vows, explaining that by embracing a life of simplicity, they are free to serve the Lord and His people more fully. He reminded them of the rich Carmelite tradition, rooted in contemplation, prayer, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and encouraged them to remain faithful to their calling as they continue their journey.
The moment of the Rite of Profession, a highlight of the Mass, was marked by the three young men kneeling before Father Provincial as they professed their vows. In a symbolic act, they placed their hands in his, promising to live according to the rule and charism of the Order. Each was then presented with a white mantle, a reminder of their commitment to follow Christ more closely.
After the profession, the congregation, moved by the solemnity of the occasion, joined in prayer, offering their support and asking for God’s grace to accompany the newly professed on their spiritual path. Father Provincial then congratulated the newly professed brothers, reminding them that while the journey continues, they are now firmly rooted in the Carmelite family and its mission.
The profession of simple vows is an important milestone in the life of a Carmelite. It marks the conclusion of the novitiate and the beginning of a period of temporary vows, during which the newly professed brothers continue their formation and discernment before eventually making their solemn vows. This period is dedicated to deepening their understanding of the Carmelite way of life and preparing for lifelong service to God and the Church.
The entire Carmelite community in Vietnam rejoiced in this special occasion, celebrating the faith and dedication of these young men. Their profession of vows reflects the growth of the Carmelite presence in the country and its contribution to the spiritual life of the local Church. As these three brothers begin this new chapter of their journey, the Carmelite family and the wider Catholic community in Vietnam offer their prayers and support, trusting in the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to guide them in their life of prayer, contemplation, and service to the Lord.
