Saturday, November 9, 2024
Middletown, NY – The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown hosted its annual Commemoration of All Carmelite Souls, an event steeped in reverence and prayer, honoring the friars and members of the Carmelite family who have departed this life.
The solemn occasion began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Father Mario Esposito, O.Carm., Prior Provincial of the St. Elias Province. The Mass drew Carmelite friars, religious, and laity from across the region, all united in remembering those who have faithfully served in the spirit of Carmel. During the Mass, a poignant moment unfolded as the names of deceased friars were individually called out. This tradition, rooted in the Carmelite commitment to praying for the dead, serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between the living and the departed in the communion of saints.
Following the liturgy, the congregation participated in a solemn procession to the Carmelite cemetery located on the shrine grounds. Chanting and prayer accompanied the journey, creating an atmosphere of sacred reflection. Upon arrival at the cemetery, the graves were blessed, and prayers were offered for eternal rest and peace for all the departed friars and members of the Carmelite community.
This annual commemoration underscores the Carmelites’ deep commitment to honoring their deceased members and the enduring legacy they leave behind. The faithful departed are not forgotten but are lovingly entrusted to God’s care, reflecting the order’s hope in the resurrection and the promise of eternal life.
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel remains a place of spiritual solace and community, welcoming all who seek to deepen their faith and participate in the rich Carmelite tradition.
